The opportunity
Blackhawk Specialty Tools pioneered a game-changing cementing technology for oil and gas wells, solving fluid migration and protecting groundwater with rotational cementing tools. As the company prepared for acquisition, it needed a compelling way to communicate the technical and commercial potential of its innovations to investors unfamiliar with downhole tools.
Strategy and storytelling
HexaGroup created a series of four short, visually rich 3D animations, each based on real engineering models. These animations placed viewers “downhole” to show how their tools worked in action without including proprietary details. We also developed a video tour of Blackhawk’s facility in Houma, Louisiana, and an animated growth story highlighting the company’s trajectory from startup to market leader.
Execution highlights
To tie everything together, HexaGroup built a multilingual iPad app for the Blackhawk sales and leadership teams. With all animations and videos embedded in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, the app allowed teams to present a polished, immersive brand story at global investor meetings and events. This digital tool transformed complex technology into accessible storytelling.
Outcomes at scale
The effort paid off. Blackhawk used the animations in all investor meetings, helping to simplify technical explanations and strengthen the company’s positioning. Bain Capital acquired the company for an estimated $200 million. The tools we developed became central to a narrative that made Blackhawk’s value impossible to miss.
